HOW TO MAINTAIN BASAL METABOLIC RATE (BMR)

Principles of Basal Metabolic Rate with respect to

> facts about fats

> metabolic age

>Estimated Energy Requirements

> Dr Liz Lane principles of total daily energy expenditure

Facts about fats:Our body needs healthy fats for energy and other functions.  But too much saturated fat can cause cholesterol to build up in  your (arteries ) blood vessels.  Saturated fats raise your LDL (bad) cholesterol. High level of  LDL increases your risk for heart disease and stroke

Note: HDL: High Density Lipoproteins and LDL Low Density Lipoproteins

>BMR :Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories required to keep your body functioning at rest

It is also known as your body metabolism.

Metabolism/metabolic rate is also defined as the rate at which your body expends energy or burns calories

>Metabolic Age is a comparison between a person's BMR against the average BMR for an age. *If your BMR age is higher than your actual age, it is an indication that you need to improve your metabolism rate*

>Estimated Energy Requirements (EER)

Total number of calories a person needs each day varies depending on number of factors; age, sex, height and physical activities

For adult women estimated range from 1600-2000 calories per day and 2000-3000 calories for adults men per day. Those that live a sedentary life should take less calories, those that engage in regular physical activities may take more calories

In addition, due to reduction in basal metabolic rate that occur with age , the  aged should reduce the amount of daily calories intake

Dr Liz Lane principle of total daily energy expenditure (BMR)

1.Thermic effect: about 10% of calories hour body burns in a day is due to digestion of food

Note: thermic effects entails the energy required to digest,  absorb and disposal of ingested nutrients in the body

2. Physical activities: about 25%-35% is due to physical factors; how much you move (walk, run, dance, etc)

3. Calories burned at rest (BMR): 65%-75% of total energy expenditure is due to BMR

BMR essentially is how many calories your body utilizes to maintain vital functions like heart beats and pumping blood), blood circulation in your vessels,

Other factors essential for BMR~

•increase your protein intake: proteins helps to burn out more calories

due to high themic effect. A high protein intake tends to boost metabolism

• *High intensity physical activities is superior to long duration low energy exercise.* Basically the more oxygen your blood uses during or after exercise the harder it will take the body to come back to its state of rest; it will use more energy, intensity is more important than duration
